About

Wilco Iris is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to support and empower queer and questioning students and their allies through student-led, adult-supported programming, education, outreach work, and social events. Our adult volunteers are carefully vetted and undergo a background check in order to help our students create an inclusive and safe space in their schools and community.

EVENTS

STUDENT LEADERS

Wilco Iris is a student-led, adult facilitated group for queer students and their allies. Student leaders are integral to our organization and are selected each year through an application and interview process. Our goal is to have at least one student leader from each high school in Williamson County, and by accepting this role, our students commit to representing Wilco Iris at our events for one school year.

Our Student Leadership Council meets monthly to share ideas, discuss issues that LGBTQIA+ students face at their schools, and plan upcoming events and outreach initiatives. New for the 2024-25 school year are committees that each student leader can join, including Event Planning, Social Media/Library, Student Connection, and Iris Impact, whose focus is on education and outreach to school administration and the broader community.

Any interested LGBTQIA+ identifying high school student who either attends a Williamson County public, private, or home based school, OR resides in Williamson County, is encouraged to apply for the Student Leadership Council. Student leaders are asked to provide parental permission and a signed media release  Please note that our group does not require membership, and that our monthly social events and quarterly books clubs are always OPEN to every queer high schooler and their supportive allies.

OUR STORY

Wilco Iris is a student-led and adult-supported organization in Williamson County, Tennessee, just minutes from Nashville. Wilco Iris was formed in the fall of 2020 during the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic as a branch of our former parent non-profit, Williamson Social Justice Alliance. We transitioned to our own 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in response to local students expressing a continued need for a supportive and encouraging space for LGBTQIA+ teenagers to meet, forge powerful friendships, and work together to help build an empowered and inclusive community.
